A panchayat town located in Hassan district in the state of Karnataka, Belur was the early capital of the Hoysala Empire. Famous for its exquisite temples, the serenity of Belur is attributed to the celebrated temple of Channakeshava, which was built to commemorate the conversion of the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana from Jainism to Vaishnavism in 117 A.
